AI-powered brand tool.
MVP at speed.

The Moment

March 2020. COVID-19 drove ~80% of Americans back into their kitchens, nearly doubling pre-pandemic home cooking. Kroger's identical sales grew 14.1%, triple the historical rate, as customers stockpiled. Basket values were up 28% YoY. But by mid-summer, a quieter problem was surfacing: customers were buying more fresh food than they knew what to do with, and throwing a lot of it away. Recipe fatigue was real. Kitchen novices were overwhelmed.

The Insight

Kroger had 20,000 recipes in its database, but buried so deep in website navigation that customers had to already know what they wanted to find them. The insight: people didn't need more recipes. They needed a smart, patient guide who could meet them where they were with whatever they had on hand, and make cooking feel less like a chore. 40% of U.S. food was being wasted. Kroger, as the country's largest grocer, had both the data and the brand permission to help.

The Strategy

Rather than wait up to a year for full app integration, make a judgment call: build an MVP at a fraction of the cost and timeline. Test the concept on Twitter where two-way conversation was native behavior using Clarifai's off-the-shelf AI food recognition technology. If it worked, the data would build the business case for the full platform. Finally, the Chefbot character was tied directly to the existing Fresh for Everyone™ campaign, which compounded brand equity rather than starting from scratch. No incremental budget required; reallocated unused experiential marketing funds.

The Work

Customers tweeted a photo of up to three ingredients. The Chefbot, a Kroji robot character in a chef's hat, built to match Kroger's animated Fresh for Everyone™ cast, recognized 2,000+ foods via Clarifai's AI, matched them to Kroger's recipe database, and tweeted back a personalized recipe within seconds. The integrated launch campaign spanned social, influencer, digital properties, and PR, and were all tied to Kroger's Zero Hunger Zero Waste platform.

The Impact

129.3MM impressions. Coverage across 27 national press outlets (143MM potential impressions). +33% Response Rate increase (incremental sales per 1MM impressions) across social channels in October. Won Kroger's first major marketing industry awards: Shorty Awards, The One Show, London International Awards, which earned the marketing org new internal visibility. The MVP generated the data needed to make the business case for a full-platform iteration.
