Emotional brand storytelling.
Fully integrated marketing.
National holiday campaign.
The Moment
Holiday 2022. Post-pandemic inflation anxiety was real, and consumers were actively cutting discretionary spend. For a grocer, it’s a dangerous moment because when budgets tighten, food can feel functional, not joyful. Kroger had 40MM active shoppers about to make one of the most emotionally loaded purchases of their year.
The Insight
When money’s tight, customers cut the fun budget, but they do not compromise on the food. Holiday meals are the last thing to go. The insight surfaced from a single customer quote: ‘I want my daughter to remember what we cook together, and the recipes that I taught her.’ Food isn’t the meal. It’s the time machine.
The Strategy
Lead with emotion at the top of the funnel; support with value in targeted channels. A long-form hero film anchors the ‘food memories’ idea and that same theme is orchestrated across every touchpoint simultaneously (e.g., broadcast TV, CTV, social, email, OOH, in-store POS, shoppable videos, in-store AR activations, even a slew of grandma influencers (The Gram Squad). Emotional affinity and holiday promos working together, not in separate silos. This is the Fresh for Everyone™ brand platform expressed in a new emotional register. Isabela, the late wife at the heart of the film, is a Kroji character from the brand universe. Same world, same cast, same human truth about food belonging to everyone. The Magical Cookbook didn’t launch a new campaign; it deepened an existing one, compounding equity across every touchpoint simultaneously rather than starting from scratch.
The Creative
Animated short film: Jack, a widowed grandfather, finds his late wife Isabela's cookbook. With each recipe he cooks, he is transported through decades of family memories. He ends by passing the last bite to his granddaughter, choosing to stay in the present and make new memories. No dialogue. Directed by Yves Geleyn (John Lewis 'Bear and the Hare') and Michael Thurmeier (Ice Age). Music: Colbie Caillat custom cover of 'Iris' by the Goo Goo Dolls, which was released as a full single on Spotify and played as in-store audio across all Kroger locations. The story extended across over half a billion integrated media impressions, in social content; dedicated landing page at Kroger.com/madewithlove with shoppable recipes tied to the film; influencer series across Meta (Gram Squad grandmas), YouTube (Mythical Kitchen), and TikTok; a Food Network custom content integration; downloadable story coloring books for kids; AR Hero Mirrors in-store; and across all employee communications during the holidays.
The Impact
Record ROI. Highest recall scores in brand history. Multiple industry awards. A perfect score (5.0 Stars) from System1 Group’s top holiday ads of the season.
